Lydia Reynolds: He said I was far too sensitive and neurotic and if I had an abortion I'd just have a breakdown with guilt feeling. And do you know why? Because I was too nutty. And then, he said he was awfully sorry but he couldn't possible recommend termination of pregnancy in my case. He seemed quite moved actually very sympathetic. And off I went to convince this man that if I had this baby I was going to be a complete mental and physical wreck. You know, private nursing home and all that lark. So I got this man to give me the name of one of those really expensive chaps who do it legally on psychological grounds. Of course, I was determined not to have it. Lydia Reynolds: You know, I was pregnant once. Lydia Reynolds: I don't know, this place is so chaotic. Rosamund Stacey: Love him? I hardly know him. Rosamund Stacey: Look, Lydia, you don't know him, he doesn't know it's happened and I'm not going to tell him so let's forget about him shall we? Lydia Reynolds: It's none of my business but what about this man, whoever he is? Rosamund Stacey: Lord, Lydi', the last thing on Earth I want is my mother home. Lydia Reynolds: Then get your mother home. Rosamund Stacey: My sister's got three of her own. Her spirit drives my passion for this work to ensure we meet your satisfaction in providing the care and service your loved ones deserve to have.Lydia Reynolds: But you ought to tell somebody, Ros. My mother lost her life due to unforeseen medical circumstances in 2022, Still, her excitement and joy before her death, knowing I was opening a personal care home for seniors birthed by her medical care circumstances, resonated with me even after her death. They operated a Non-profit Food Pantry, a Clothing Closet Program, and the Brown Bag Food Program and led New Beginnings Outreach Ministry together. Joyce established an outreach ministry with my father, the late Pastor Derriet Reed, and together they dedicated their lives to serving the sick and shut-in, homeless, and those less fortunate. She opened her home to many seniors who did not have family and cared for them as her own family. Joyce's Touch of Love Personal care home has been established in memory and honor of our mother, Joyce Reed, a licensed nurse of more than 25 years dedicated to serving and helping the elderly and those in need. Every family deserves to have accessible home care options to ensure their loved ones get the proper love and care they deserve. Unfortunately, our options were very limited to nursing homes, which we found were understaffed and could not provide that personal touch of love, attention, and care our loved ones wanted and needed.Īfter realizing this is a significant problem for many families and not just our family, I made it a mission to ensure others would not experience the same hardship my family experienced in our time of need for my mother. Like many of you, our family has needed personal home care for our loved ones. Our residents' needs are the most important to us, and we strive for excellence in our care. Our main goal is to provide our residents with a safe, loving, and caring environment that promotes and supports a better quality of life. ![]() ![]() owner and operator of Joyce's Touch of Love Personal Care Home. ![]() ![]() Consumers, therefore, may or may not change market channels depending on preferences and the purpose of the shopping trip.” The CSU study found that “liquor stores often carry a wide assortment of all alcohol types and provide knowledgeable staff that can help consumers make a selection. I think there’ll be a lot of stores that really lean into that and try to build their businesses around that.” “Spirits have been growing in popularity, as have ready-to-drink cocktails. “And if they do, it’s really just a minor nod to it rather than leaning into it.”Īdditionally, “spirits become a lot more important” for liquor stores, he said. “Chain stores don’t really do craft, and they don’t really do local,” Dierking said. So while grocery stores certainly carry some craft brews, their shoppers are much more likely to be looking to grab a sixer of Coors Light than a growler of their favorite hometown nanobrewery’s latest seasonal offering. “Whether or not you were able to enter into the grocery store channel largely depended on your size and your scope of operations,” Costanigro said. “A lot of them have a few case stacks here and there, but it’s still pretty haphazard.”ĭierking said his “best guess for smaller liquor stores that are directly adjacent to grocery stores” is that “if those grocery stores really lean into wine, they’ll put people out of business within a couple of years.”Ī pivot in strategy could provide some hope for liquor stores because grocery stores don’t carry the same variety of beer and wine and liquor sellers, nor do they sell spirits such as whiskey and vodka. “It’s a little bit more of a guessing game of what might be, especially because a lot of grocery chains haven’t fully rolled out” their wine aisles, displays and products. Only a few days after the law granting grocery stores the ability to sell wine, “there’s not enough data to draw any inferences or anything,” he said. Regardless of the scope of the visitation decline ultimately experienced by non-grocery sellers, the introduction of new, often corporate-backed competition “won’t be good for liquor stores - we can say that for sure,” Bruce Dierking, general manager of locally owned Hazel’s Beverage World in Boulder, told BizWest. “Once youre talking about a 10% decrease in visits … some stores are going to start to hurt,” Costanigro said. If Colorado liquor stores have a similar experience to their peers in Oklahoma, those concerns about competition contraction may prove valid. Policy makers are also concerned that a mass transfer will lead to consolidation in the retail tier of alcohol markets, ultimately reducing competition and harming consumers.” “Trade associations on behalf of liquor stores claim that alcohol liberalization will result in the mass transfer of alcohol sales to grocery and convenience stores to the detriment of many small businesses. “The policy changes are part of a national trend towards liberalizing alcohol distribution and allowing sales in new market channels,” the study said. However, that decrease in visitation could double to around 10% with the introduction of wine in grocery stores, according to the CSU study, which used Oklahoma, a state that allowed both beer and wine sales by grocers in 2018, as a model for comparison. “It’s not that much - they can absorb it,” Costanigro said of liquor-store operators. The study from Nathan Palardy and Marco Costanigro found that since 2019, when Colorado grocers began selling beer, visitations at liquor stores have decreased by about 5%. While this new competition is likely to take a bite out of liquor stores’ customer bases, a shift in strategy in favor of greater focus on spirits, craft beer and wine, and local and specialty offerings could keep retailers in the game, a new study from economics professors at the Colorado State University posits. ![]() FORT COLLINS - Last week, Colorado grocery and convenience stores began selling wine, opening up a large new channel of competition for the state’s liquor stores.

Many peasants were also able to supplement their income from pursuing such occupations as mining or fishing, or working as artisans or traders. Peasant landholdings doubled in size in the period 1380 to 1540, enabling peasants to produce a surplus for sale in local markets. One of the economic impacts of the Black Death and climate deterioration from the 1340s was to make more land available population decline meant that those who survived were in demand as agricultural labourers, able to sell their services for hard cash, rather than land or kind. Typically this is based on agricultural production on a piece of land held by customary tenure (common land) or copyhold tenure (in return for which the tenant had to render certain services to the lord of the manor).įifteen acres of arable land and pasture is just about enough to keep a family fed, and few peasant smallholdings exceeded 30 acres in extent up to the mid-14th century. Professor Dyer thinks that ‘peasant’ is a very useful word, and that nobody has yet devised an adequate substitute to denote people in the lower ranks of society, living in the countryside and gaining their main living from the resources available to them as a result of their own labours. For peasant, read ‘largely self-sufficient’.Ĭhris Dyer, author of Making a Living in the Middle Ages, points out that some historians are reluctant to use the term because they think it too imprecise (yet they happily use equally broad terms such as ‘merchant’ and ‘artisan’). Many a modern allotment-holder leads a semi-peasant lifestyle, and there are plenty of contemporary peasants all over southern and eastern Europe – not to mention those living in hippy communes in west Wales. With the radio off, driving around town in two wheel drive, I noticed that the electric motor’s whine would slowly rise in pitch just like any EV. The whole off-road experience is far smoother than internal combustion, but the vehicle surprised me in another way on the road. This advantage is greatly magnified by gear reduction, so running in 4-Low in the vehicle’s lowest gear allows for not only amazing torque at the wheels, but a great amount of control over that torque. Instead of having to gas-brake-gas-brake over obstacles, you can give it just the right amount of power to smoothly climb an obstacle. The biggest advantage is going to be how controllable they are at low RPM. I won’t be discussing any hybrid behavior, gas engines, etc.Īs I pointed out in this other article/video, upcoming full EV off-road vehicles are going to be awesome. ![]() Before you all get the rope, I’m only going to be discussing the vehicle’s behavior in EV mode in this article. Yes, I know, the Wrangler 4xe is a plugin hybrid. In its most efficient drive mode (which the EPA doesn’t use), it got far more range on the real highway than anticipated, while the Tesla fell a little short of EPA estimates.īut what happens when we go beyond 2 gears? Would an EV benefit from 3, 4, or even 5 speeds? As we’re finding out, it turns out that the answer to that is “Yes.” What I Learned From the Wrangler 4xe This, along with other factors, explains why the Taycan got such a good number in Edmunds‘ range testing. At highway speeds, both the front and rear drive units employ an 8.5:1 gear ratio, but the rear motor can go as high as 15:1, allowing for way more torque multiplication during the initial launch, before switching to a gear that’s taller than the Teslas for highway cruising. Porsche took this idea to the next level by introducing a two-speed transmission in the rear drive unit. Plus, the front motor on performance models is smaller and is better suited to this task. At higher cruising speeds (highway driving), the power gets diverted mostly to the front motor, which has a higher gear ratio, effectively giving the vehicle a second gear. At low speeds, a Tesla can send more power to the rear wheels where they’ll do better for launching. The fact that an EV can do without multiple gear ratios doesn’t mean they can’t make things a little better, though, and Tesla knows this. EVs can just stay in a single gear that covers all of the vehicle’s speeds, so you can do without a transmission. Eventually (often before 40 MPH), you need to shift to a higher gear to not destroy the engine. To roll down the road, it’s not strictly necessary to have multiple gear ratios to avoid over-revving the electric motor the way you’d over-rev a gas or diesel engine. Yes, it’s true that an electric motor can operate across a much wider range of speeds (RPMs) than a gas engine. If they’re doing okay without one, then it must not be important, right? If you look more closely at Tesla’s dual motor offerings, you’ll find that they have a transmission of sorts, and reap those benefits in a rather creative way. Tesla fans tend to think that transmissions aren’t necessary or good because they think Tesla’s vehicles don’t have a transmission. Why EVs Benefit from Transmissionsīefore I get to my specific experience, I want to go over the reasons EV transmissions are a good thing. Last month I had a chance to experience this for myself, and I wanted to share what I learned from the experience. ![]() Since then, we’ve seen a number of EVs and plugin hybrids that use a transmission, and the advantages that were mathematically predictable (as well as known from the DIY EV scene that predated mass EV production) became a reality. ![]() ![]() Just over two years ago, I wrote an article discussing upcoming EV transmissions. ![]() Unlike in other countries, medical doctors in the Netherlands do not immediately start training to become a specialist immediately after graduation. They first work as ” ANIOS ” for a while . ANIOS stands for “ Physician Assistant Not Specialist Training ” and it is a position in which primary physicians usually work 1 to 3/4 years to gain clinical experience and expand their network within their desired specialty before applying for an ” AIOS ” (Physician Assistant in Specialist Training)position, namely a training place. Although it is technically possible to apply for an AIOS position immediately after obtaining your BIG registration, in practice it does not make sense to do so without relevant ANIOS experience for most hospital specialisms (outside the hospital, this is often possible easier). In addition, in this competitive labor market for doctors in the Netherlands, doctors without relevant work experience often have little chance of a training place. Not sure yet which way you want to go? Then work for a while as ANIOS in a broad specialism such as internal medicine, which forms a good basis for many specialties both within and outside the hospital. The medicine training itself consists of 2 parts: the first 3 years are mainly theoretical in nature. The internships have been done for the last 3 years. So in total you will be working for 6 years before you can call yourself a basic doctor. You are not yet specialized. A number of universities have at least committed to use part lottery and part entrance exams. However, for a few years now, a decentralized selection method has been in place: this means that every student who meets the conditions, through various admission rounds, is ultimately accepted at the university in question. Procedures that are used in the admission are: sending your application with motivation for application and in detail why you are suitable for the study program. You can then be invited to a second round, in which knowledge tests or interviews can be taken. Each university has its own admission procedures and / or exams.ĭue to increasing criticism of the inequality that this system entails, the draw will probably return from 2021. Until a few years ago, medicine training in the Netherlands was a lottery study. This means that, based on your average of your high school profile subjects, you were divided into different draw classes, with the higher averages being more likely to be drawn. The time has finally come! After years of studying, endless exams and internships, you finally have your BIG registration and you can start working as a doctor in the Netherlands. But how do you find a job as a doctor in the Netherlands?įirst, a little information about how basic medicine training in the Netherlands is organized |
